About Us
GB Manchester traces its history back to the late 1930s when George Brooks Manchester began selling appliances and, later, television sets. A couple of decades later, Manchester shepherded his company into the AV space by installing phonographs, amplifiers, and speakers in merchant ships docked in Portland shipyards.
One business evolution inspired another.
In 1966, Manchester became a Rauland distributor and went from the shipyards to the schoolyards, installing amplifiers, paging systems, and intercoms in local schools. Ten years later, a Rauland salesman named Steve Oaks met with Manchester over drinks one evening. Long story short: Oaks bought the business for $50,000 and took ownership on New Year’s Day 1977.
Projects
One technological innovation inspired another.
GBM extended its reach further into the low-voltage field by designing custom-made electronics, including circuit boards. In fact, the first-ever touchscreen door controller was designed right here.
In February 2002, Oaks sold the business to Bill Halberg, who remains the current owner of GB Manchester to this day. The company continues to focus on innovating in the communications, fire alarm, security, and sound reinforcement fields.
